How Braces Work
Before applying the brackets, Dr. William Kottemann, Dr. Kraig Kottemann, Dr. Scott Kottemann, or Dr. Alisha Holt, and our team will collect photos and X-rays of your mouth. Sometimes we’ll use our iTero Element scanner to scan each of your teeth and the layout of your gums and mouth. This process takes 10-15 minutes and provides an extremely accurate 3D view of your mouth.
After the X-Ray and optional scan, We’ll use this information to create your customized treatment plan. This will include how we need to move each tooth to put it in its ideal position.
Drs. Kottemann or Dr. Holt will decide how to place the brackets based on this information. For example, if you have some teeth that need tilted, placing those brackets will differ from placing brackets for teeth that need turned.

Ceramic braces are another great option for straightening your teeth. Ceramic braces are also referred to as clear braces, tooth-colored braces, or aesthetic braces. They work the same way metal braces do. Our clear braces are designed to be less noticeable on your teeth than metal braces. They're smaller than ever and made of nearly invisible tooth-colored polycrystalline ceramic material. They’re very popular with our older teen and adult patients because they are such a discrete treatment option. Since the brackets are a bit larger and more brittle than their metal counterparts, we normally won’t recommend them for our younger patients. Ceramic braces are used on the upper front teeth more often than the lower teeth.
