Different types of mouthguards

Pre-Made Mouthguards

The most common mouthguard, since it’s what you’ll find in most sporting goods stores. They come in various sizes and colors but is least effective option because it has a generic design as opposed to a custom fit and requires the athlete to close his/her mouth to keep it in place.

“Boil-and-Bite” Mouthguards

These provide a customized fit by being placed in warm water to be soft before being fit in the athlete’s mouth and cooled down. Found online and in sporting good stores, these can have proper fit around dental appliances when shaped properly.

Custom-made Mouthguards

These mouthguards are made from patient impressions at the office, giving the most effective protection since they are fully custom.
